All overnight retreat participants must be LGBTQIA+, 21+, and based in Maine to attend. The location of Big Queer Summer Camp is Trescott, ME. We will gather from August 30th to September 1st. We will share exact location and a detailed itinerary with confirmed participants.
Our selection process prioritizes LGBTQIA+ people in rural regions of Maine as well as those with intersectional identities such as LGBTQIA+ BIPOC or LGBTQIA+ people in the disability community.
On this trip, we have space for 50 participants, more space than we've ever had before!
The Basics
Why Come?: The intention and purpose of this space is to engage with the outdoors while strengthening community connections and belonging in a Queer centered environment. If that sounds like your type of space, move forward on pre-registration.
Campus: We will have access to several buildings on the 50 acre campus we reserve including 3 conference/classroom spaces, a commercial kitchen, dining hall/large function room, a pottery/art studio, and a library (with a dedicated LGBTQIA+ books section!) in addition to our lodge. There is a fire ring, a bandstand, a community garden, and trails to explore.
Sleep Arrangements: We will sleep in large bunk houses although there are a limited number of tent camping options for those who prefer it; we are able to provide you outdoor gear including sleeping bags, sleeping mats, and warm clothing at no cost.
Accessibility: All indoor spaces we will be using are wheelchair accessible. The outdoor pathways between buildings and across campus are gravel with a gradual incline. There are accessibility parking spots near the lodge, and in the lodge are two sleeping quarters with attached bathrooms and accommodations in place for wheelchair users. There are beds near outlets for those who sleep using a CPAP / sleeping device.
Food: There will be an optional meal plan that participants can adopt for breakfast and dinner both nights; each meal will cost $18 per participant. Alternatively, participants are welcome to bring their own food in a cooler and cook meals on their own schedule and to their preferences. Allergies can be accommodated for planned group meals.
Activities: While structured activities and workshops will be offered throughout the weekend and our participant offerings board provides the opportunity for participants to announce and lead their own group activities and workshops, there is no obligation to engage with everything all the time. This is also a retreat that encourages participants to rest and embrace self-care.
Preparation: Attendees are expected to attend a 30 minute orientation over Zoom to go over trip details & group guidelines. A list of potential Zoom dates will be sent out to folks confirmed for the trip.
PRE-REGISTRATION WILL BE OPEN UNTIL JUNE 1ST 5:00PM EST. Filling out a form does not automatically guarantee a spot on the overnight trip. You will receive an official update June 2nd via email. Please keep an eye out for your update, and reach out if you have any questions!
